Cassava Cyanide Diseases & Neurolathyrism Network

چکیده
were taken to Makueni Hospital, treated and discharged. The family looked extremely poor and the only meal they had was boiled and raw cassava. In the second family, a child aged 5 died in Makueni District Hospital while continuing with management. Both families complained of headaches, abdominal pains and discomfort, vomiting, general body weakness and some fever. The Health Officer collected the cooked and uncooked cassava and fresh samples from the same plants where cassava was harvested. The cassava tasted bitter as claimed by the family members. The area had experienced drought for the last 3 years. The cyanide content was determined by a modified picrate method. 5 Chromatographic paper 6

Cassava Cyanide Diseases & Neurolathyrism Network
Fifty year ago, a paper in Biochemistry by Professor S.L.N. Rao described the chemical structure of a new amino acid occurring abundantly in the seeds of Lathyrus sativus and believed to be the cause of the human crippling disease neurolathyrism. Since then this non-protein amino acid β-N-oxalyl-l-α, βdiaminopropionic acid or β-ODAP, has been the focus of numerous studies in a great variety of ...

Konzo (caused by consumption of improperly processed cassava, Manihot esculenta) and neurolathyrism (caused by prolonged overconsumption of grass pea, Lathyrus sativus) are two distinct non-infectious upper motor neurone diseases with identical clinical symptoms of spastic paraparesis of the legs. They affect many thousands of people among the poor in the remote rural areas in the central and s...
متن کاملGrowth and cyanide degradation of Azotobacter vinelandii in cyanide-containing wastewater system.
Azotobacter vinelandii, a strict aerobic nitrogen-fixing bacterium, has been extensively studied with regard to the ability of N2-fixation due to its high expression of nitrogenase and fast growth. Because nitrogenase can also reduce cyanide to ammonia and methane, cyanide degradation by A. vinelandii has been studied for the application in the bioremediation of cyanide-contaminated wastewater....
متن کاملModelling potential β-carotene intake and cyanide exposure from consumption of biofortified cassava
Vitamin A (VA) deficiency causes disability and mortality. Cassava can be crossbred to improve its β-carotene (BC) content; typical white cassava contains negligible amounts of BC. However, cassava contains cyanide and its continued consumption may lead to chronic disability. Our objective was to estimate the risk-benefit of consuming BC-enhanced cassava to increase VA intake. A total of ten Am...
